Interest and motivation decline over time. It's a natural process. So now that the initial excitement is gone, answer me - do you still want to start a popular blog? Or do you still want to become the CEO of a software company?
If you don't want it as much as you did when you started the project, then it's easy to make a decision. Stop wasting your resources on it, unplug the charger, and move on. At least you learned something.
However, if your desire to publish a book (or whatever you want to do) is as strong as it was before all the rejections and failures - then you need to ask yourself the following question.
Have you done everything possible to succeed?
You really want to get the project done, but your desire rich people number user data wasn't enough. So ask yourself, have you really given your company the best chance of success? Or have you…
- just work on a project when you feel motivated?
- Don't want to invest money until you see progress?
- Do you sometimes devote a few hours a week to the project when you have time?
- Do you stop working and trying too early?
- are you constantly distracted by other business ideas?
If your answer is “No” and you haven’t given your project every possible chance of success and put in the maximum effort, then it may be time to increase your efforts. But if you have really put all your energy, attention, and focus into the project for the last few years and the business is still not working, it may be time to shut down your startup.
14 months ago I asked myself similar questions
Shut down the project or double down? Which is the right decision? After two years of trying to build ConvertKit (an email marketing platform ), revenue was flat, down to about half of our peak revenues. And we were losing money every month.
A few months earlier, Hiten Shah had called me and said, "Admit that ConvertKit is a failure. Shut it down and move on to something else. You will succeed no matter what you do, so start something new."
How bad do you want it?
