How do our brains process language? David Davila, an American neuroscience student and winner of the final of the FameLab science communication competition in France, explains what sign language tells us about how we communicate. David finished second in the FameLab international final in Cheltenham in June 2014.

One thing is clear: language is complicated. So when neuroscientists start asking questions about how language is represented in the brain, we need to be careful about what questions we’re actually asking. Are we asking how the brain uses the “rules” of syntax to create coherent language? Or are we asking how our brains translate ideas or objects into words?

Because language is an abstract but complicated subject, it is important to remain open to the different possibilities of how the brain works, before formulating hypotheses.
