A few days ago, an investigation by the American company Quartz hit the media , revealing that Google collects the location of Android users even if they buy bulk sms service have disabled this service . Google has not denied this, but has asserted that it only uses this information to better manage notifications and messages received by Android phones. It will stop doing so, as users do not have express consent to record their geolocation. The controversy has not been long in coming.
Controversial, because in this case, Google would have been collecting user data without their permission. But, oh! What about the data that you/we have authorized Google to collect and archive? Are we, are you, really aware of the information Google stores about you, because you've given it permission to do so? Do you know how to manage it?
Just in case, here's how to find out what information Google keeps about you... and you might be surprised.
1 Go to Google My Activity , the section of Google that collects the data Google collects while you use its services: which YouTube videos you've watched, when you used your Gmail account and how many ads you've been shown in it, what terms you've searched for on Google, etc. To delete information you don't want to appear, you can delete entries individually or go to the menu on the left and click on "Delete activity by": you can delete by topic or product.
2. To find out which places Google knows you've been to, go to your Google Maps timeline . Alternatively, go to Google Maps and click "History" in the left-hand menu. To delete all this data, go to "Delete activity by" in your history, click "All products > Maps," and click "Delete."
