Part 2: What changes does the 2020s have in store for us?

The 2000s saw the rise of business models built on the foundation of search engines and social media. The 2010s saw disruptive companies build on the new possibilities brought about by smartphones and cloud computing.

The funny thing is, this fundamental technology announced itself well before it had proven itself as a foundation layer to enable new business innovation. Search engines and early social media have been around since the late 1990s (search engine Altavista was founded in 1995 and social media platform SixDegrees.com started in 1997).

The same goes for the second decade, the technological foundations came before the players who disrupted their industries. The iPhone came out 3 years before Uber. Amazon Web Services came out 4 years before Netflix started streaming.

So the question is, which technologies have proven themselves over the past few years to be the foundation for the digital innovation that will take place in the next decade?


New fundamental technologies with the potential to tackle even more complex markets.

As great as the digitally driven changes of the last two decades have been, when you look closely, only a few industries have really been transformed by digitalization. In most industries, digitalization has only scratched the surface of what the real change could be. Especially in complex value chains, it is always surprising to see to what extent operations still rely substantially on Excel sheets, manual labor and low-quality data sets.

But in recent years, new tools and technologies such as machine learning, IoT and distributed computing have proven their potential impact and economic viability. Not only do investors, consultants and other prophets talk about them, they work and they are easily available. And they have not yet reached their limit.

Because of their ability to fundamentally impact how complex industries and value chains operate. And in doing so, they will create new, innovative players.

Combine that with the power of new tools to tackle more complex business challenges in more complex industries and we can only draw one simple conclusion:
