Time magazine has published a list of the 100 best inventions of 2021. We will talk about some of them and note notable trends in science and technology.
On November 11, Time magazine published a list of 100 inventions of the year that “make the world a better, smarter, and more fun place.” The “nominees” for it were chosen not only by the magazine’s editors and correspondents around the world, but also by Time readers, and inventors themselves could submit applications via an online form on the website. The magazine’s editorial staff evaluated all applicants based on several factors — creativity, effectiveness, ambition, and potential impact on the industry.
The result is a list that tracks a number of trends. For example, recycling — from the production of reusable boxes for sending goods by mail (the growth in the volume of deliveries of various goods creates new environmental challenges) to toys made from recycled materials (for example, Lego has begun to make parts for its constructor from recycled plastic). Or the development of plant-based analogues of animal protein (such as Kuleana Tuna plant-based tuna and Upside Chicken plant-based chicken ). As well as the emergence of more complex software related to artificial intelligence, augmented and virtual reality, 3D modeling (for example, NVIDIA Omniverse — a platform for collaborative work in a virtual environment and physically correct modeling in real time) and increasingly powerful processors (for example, Cerebras CS-2 AI System , designed for fast operation of programs involving artificial intelligence).
About some other trends - in this selection.
Vaccines
First of all, we are talking about the Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna and uganda number data Johnson & Johnson–Janssen vaccines , which were created to combat the COVID-19 pandemic. They have helped reduce the number of patients with severe forms of the coronavirus and reduce the number of hospitalizations and deaths. However, they have not yet been as effective in dealing with the spread of new variants of the virus, such as delta.
Another important vaccine that has made the list is the Mosquirix Malaria Vaccine against malaria, which was approved by the WHO this year after extensive clinical trials. It took more than 30 years to create it. Its effectiveness is 30%, and Mosquirix Malaria Vaccine cannot yet guarantee complete protection against malaria, and all those vaccinated will need additional injections for a long-term effect. However, the approval of this vaccine is an important step in the fight against the disease, which kills about 400,000 people every year, 67% of whom are children under five.
