As usual every year, Google Trends released a report with the terms most searched by its users over the past year. More than a way of noticing trends, this is an excellent resource for understanding which themes really marked a given year and how History will remember it.

Let’s start with Brazil . The most searched term by Brazilians during the year was, unsurprisingly, “Pokémon GO” . Searches for the game’s term exploded a few months before its launch, in the second half of July, and peaked in August when the app was launched. Even though the game only arrived in Brazil months later, Brazilians kept their searches high.
But Brazil was not only marked by the return of Pokémon. The ranking of most searched terms also includes the Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games , Big Brother Brazil , Chapecoense and the Brasileirão Table .
In terms of the list of most searched people, the first place is occupied by former president Luis Inácio Lula da Silva . The number of searches for Lula da Silva reached its peak in March, when the former president was appointed to the post of Chief of Staff. Ana Hickmann , David Bowie , Donald Trump and Fernanda Gentili follow in the ranking.
Culture is also not left out. The most searched films were Deadpool , Suicide Squad , Batman vs. Superman , The Conjuring 2 and Finding Dory . Among the most searched memes are those related to the programs Girls in the House and A Fazenda , the Enem exams and the artist Andrea Mello .
