Let's face it: many of us, at some point in our experience on the web, have used some kind of emoticon to complement our feelings when writing personal messages online . So now, this custom is evolving in tandem with new media and their devices; today's emojis are the name of the game .

The word emoji is born from the fusion of two words of Japanese origin: 絵 (e) = image and 文字 (moji) = letter. These are commonly used in text messages both on social networks, as well as in other types of messaging.

If we think about it carefully, emojis are essential elements in the effectiveness of social networks and instant messaging. Their success within these is mainly due to the simple way in which they are shared and even understood.

Another aspect to consider about the use of emojis is that they generate in the user:

Empathy by easily identifying through images
Creativity to generate new meanings for these
Clarity of ideas by synthesizing the written word together with graphic concepts
Fashion and relevance for the popular market
Without a doubt, these aspects result in very similar results to the functionality of the icons. Both seem to have been specially designed to be part of an entire concept applicable to a wide variety of current marketing campaigns .

Commercial application
Coca-Cola seems to be the first commercial brand to understand the commercial potential of emojis . Earlier this year, the soft drink industry giant launched its Emoticoke campaign. The goal of this campaign was to generate identity with the millennial community in Puerto Rico by taking advantage of their need to browse online through their mobile devices.

How? Cleverly, by means of different URLs that mexico whatsapp number data incorporated a wide variety of emoticons . Each of these directed its visitors to a general landing page where they had the possibility of generating new emoticons to create new addresses incorporating their own emojis .

Recently, since September of this year, this same company has managed to position itself within the advertising designed for social networks . On this occasion, through its ShareaCoke campaign , Coca Cola is positioned as the first company to generate advertising emoticons within Twitter.

The function of this campaign is something very simple : through the hashtag #shareacoke, you can share the emoji of a bottle of Coca Cola with anyone on Twitter. A very lucrative measure for these two big companies, surely.

Conclusion
Over the years, different civilizations have communicated through symbols, seeking to share important messages from generation to generation. An ancient need to transmit acquired knowledge, giving identity to each one of them.

Personally, I doubt that our current civilization's passage through history will be captured by a happy face – let alone a duckface . I suppose it would be a rather strange legacy for future civilizations, who would hardly understand the sentiment embedded within our friendly smiley face .
