What Happens After Domain Names Expire?

What Does Pending Deletion Mean?
The domain name is in a state called “Pending Delete” for approximately 5 days after expiration. Pending delete means that the domain name is about to expire but is not yet publicly available. Once the pending delete period expires, the domain is not actually deleted, but the WHOIS record is deleted.

Can a Registrant Delete Their Own Domain Name?

Renewal Reminder Notifications
Even if you manually turn off renewal reminders (for whatever reason), email reminders will start to go out approximately 30 days before the domain expires. You’ll receive at least two reminders before the expiration date and one reminder five days after the expiration date. So keep an eye on your inbox or change your settings to mark the words “expiration” or “renewal” to make sure you don’t miss these important reminders.

Automatic Renewal
You can save yourself from forgetting by looking at your account information and switching your domain to auto-renew. When auto-renew is in effect, it will automatically renew your domain name prior to its expiration date, usually the day before it expires. This feature will continue to work and auto-renew unless changes are made or there are issues with your billing information.
