What are internal transitions in Yandex.Metrica and how to combat them?

Post by Nusaiba10030 »

Yandex.Metrica reports often feature a type of traffic called "internal." Yandex defines these as visits from its own resource or one of its mirror sites—a full or partial copy of the site.

Technically, a traffic source is considered an internal transition if a visit to one of the pages is made, for example, from the contact section, even though the metrics counter is only installed on the homepage. Let's explore why this is possible and how to fix it.

Reasons for internal transitions
The idea that the visitor came from a browser bookmark or manually entered the address is not valid; it's a direct visit. There are two common reasons:

Visit timeout. The default timeout for a user's visit to the site is 30 minutes. If a user visits a page and takes no action within the specified time limit, then returns to the same page and immediately navigates to another, Yandex will consider this an internal redirect.
A visit from a page without a counter installed to a tab with a counter. Yandex Marketing, not recognizing the source, will classify it as internal.
Also, in some cases, when the Metrica counter is installed in the footer, the tab does not have time to load, and the next move is counted as internal.

You can identify traffic sources within your website that aren't connected to Metrica in the following way:

In the list of all sources, set the filter to "Internal transitions".
In the "Content" report, find "Landing Pages." This will open the links with a counter from which the visit was made.
Modify the report by adding another grouping by the visit start referrer.
The first level will show the pages that users visited, and the second level will show traffic sources. Among the latter, you should look for web pages without a counter.

In some cases, Yandex Marketing reports may show visits whose source is unspecified. This is often caused by incorrectly written counter code, with part of it placed outside the <noscript> tag.
